Foreword to the 1955 Edition
Summary
IN REPRINTING The Collected Writings of Sarah Schenirer, may she rest in peace, it is impossible to forget all Mrs Schenirer's close collaborators, who helped her create and develop the Bais Yaakov seminary in Kraków and the international Bais Yaakov movement in general. And while their deeds stand as a memorial to them, nevertheless let their names also be mentioned here, as a memory for all eternity.
RABBI YEHUDAH LEIB ORLEAN. Principal of the Bais Yaakov seminary in Kraków, Poland, gifted writer and orator. Among the most influential leaders in the ranks of the Polish Agudath Israel, especially among the youth and workers. A long-time collaborator of Mrs Schenirer, director of the seminary; after her death he took on the key role of principal of the seminary, its leading educator and moral guide, teaching Jewish history and Judaism and giving lectures. He wrote the Judaic studies curriculum for the Bais Yaakov schools, and the textbook Jewish Culture for Bais Yaakov and Bnos, as well as Jewish Life and others. More generally, he presided over the flourishing of the Bais Yaakov seminary and put the Central Office of Bais Yaakov on a solid foundation, successfully managing the teachers in hundreds of Bais Yaakov schools throughout Poland.
During the last world war, Rabbi Yehudah Leib Orlean reached even more exalted heights. The whole bitter burden of the movement rested on the narrow shoulders of this quiet giant. Amidst the devastating troubles, his house became the Central Office for the whole Bais Yaakov movement. From there, the teachers drew solace and strength. At the risk of his own life, he issued a steady stream of writings, lesson plans, teaching materials, and encouraging letters to teachers and Bnos leaders everywhere in the country.
Rabbi Yehudah Leib Orlean died a martyr's death in one of the last transports to be organized by the Nazis, may their names be blotted out, shortly before the Liberation, on Simhat Torah 5705 (22 October 1944).
DR (LEO) shmuel deutschlander. Among the leaders of the World Organization of Agudath Israel. The founder and director of Keren Hatorah, the foundation for strengthening the Torah.
