Summary

Although Richard Wright is primarily associated with Mississippi, he is the product of a larger southern region. His formative years in Tennessee and Arkansas, along with those in his native Mississippi, contributed to shaping his young life, especially his attitude toward family and place. His triangulated South subsequently impacted his writing, including the fiction set in Chicago. Wright’s childhood and young adult spatial geographies and locational nexuses intersected in influential ways with his individual familial and specific environmental realities to inform his developing subjectivity and emergent identity as well as his characteristic responses to belonging and emotional relationships.
