Forging a Career in Clinical Psychology in the Liberal Arts Academy
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 09 April 2022
Careers, including my own, typically develop in unpredictable, nonlinear fashion and then, looking back, we construct narratives of how they unfolded. This chapter shares my narrative account of a 40-year career in academic psychology in the liberal arts college domain. From early inspiration afforded by work in a state mental hospital through the development of my joint passions for research in the area of family therapy change process research and teaching courses on psychopathology and psychotherapy, including the early development of experiential education in clinical/community psychology for undergraduates, hurdles, and challenges, as well as accomplishments, are part of this story. The chapter is also infused with reflections about the professional, personal, and social-historical forces that shaped my own career, and advice for others who are considering or pursuing an academic career in psychology in the liberal arts academy.
