The king's request for a subsidy

Rex venerabili in Christo patri Willelmo, eadem gratia Eboracensi archiepiscopo, Angliae primati, salutem. Quia Scoti inimici et rebelles nostri qui tempore Domini Edwardi quondam regis Angliae patris nostri contra quern in rebellionem proruperunt et nostro postmodum infra regnum nostrum homicidia, depraedationes, incendia et alia damna innumerabilia multipliciter perpetrarunt, finita treuga inter nos et ipsos nuper inita dictum regnum nostrum in magna multitudine ingressi in eodem consimilia facinora perpetrantes aetati vel sexui seu loco sacro vel religioso non parcentes, ac quidam magnates de regno nostro nobis subditi a iamdiu nobis inoboedientes et rebelles se in magna multitudine ad partes boreales transtulerunt populum nostrum destruentes ac castrum nostrum de Tickhull armata potentia obsedentes, per quod ordinavimus et esse proponimus, Domino concedente, apud Coventry prima Dominica Quadragesimae proximo futura [28 February 1322] cum equis et armis quanto decentius et potentius poterimus ad proficiscendum exinde contra dictos inimicos inoboedientes et rebelles nostros ad eorum malitiam et proterviam cum Dei adiutorio refrenandas. Nos de vestra fidelitate ad plenum confidentes sperantes etiam quod in tanto et tarn arduo negotio nos et statum ac salvationem regni nostri praedicti specialiter tangente manu porrigere velitis adiutricem, vobis in fide et dilectione quibus nos tenemini firmiter iniungentes mandamus vos etiam specialiter requirimus et rogamus quatenus de hominibus ad arma equitibus et peditibus quanto decentius poteritis considerata diligenter qualitate negotii praedicti nos iuvetis et eosdem homines armis competentibus bene munitos habeatis ad nos ad diem et locum praedictos ad proficiscendum exinde nobiscum in obsequium nostrum supradictum, vel de alio subsidio competenti nos ad eosdem diem et locum ita curialiter respiciatis et gratanter, quod vestro mediante subsidio negotia nostra praedicta ad nostrum et vestrum honorem et commodum et populi regni nostri tranquillitatem et quietem perpetuam feliciter valeant expediri, et quod vobis exinde in futurum arctius teneamur. Et si forsitan ad eosdem diem et locum obstante aliquo impedimento (quod absit) praemissa facere nonpossitis, tune ea postea ita festinanter compleatis, quod ex hoc perpendere possimus qualem affectionem ad nostram expeditionem optatam geritis et habeatis. Pensantes intime quod in praedicto negotio status totius regni nostri, tarn ecclesiae quam populi versatur. Et de eo quod inde facere volueritis, nos sine dilatione aliqua reddatis per vestras literas certiores. Teste rege apud Gloucestriam, decimo sexto die Februarii [16 February 1322]. Per ipsum regem.
