After the restoration the convocations of Canterbury and York met in tandem with parliament and were invariably summoned by royal writ. The Canterbury convocation normally met (and was also subsequently dissolved) on the day after parliament.198 The York convocation normally assembled a few days later and was dissolved at the first opportunity after the dissolution of parliament. This system came to an end in 1966, when parliament dispensed the convocations from this requirement. Since 1970, both convocations have assembled at the same time as the general synod of the Church of England, which is elected for a five-year term.
