The archbishop's mandate
Reverendo in Christo patri ac domino Domino Roberto, Dei gratia Cicestrensi episcopo, Richardus, permissione divina Londoniensis episcopus, salutem et sincerae dilectionis continuum incrementum. Literas reverendissimas in proprio patris et domini Domini Thomae, Dei gratia Cantuariensis archiepiscopi, totius Angliae primatis et apostolicae sedis legati, decimo octavo die praesentis mensis Octobris [18 October 1413] cum ea qua decuit reverentia recepimus, tenorem qui sequitur continentes:
Thomas, permissione divina Cantuariensis archiepiscopus, totius Angliae primas et apostolicae sedis legatus, venerabili fratri nostro Domino Richardo, Dei gratia Londoniensi episcopo, salutem et fraternam in Domino caritatem. Cum nos, non sine cordis amaritudine, deplangimus in orto specialissimo matris nostrae Ecclesiae Anglicanae quae dudum inter ceteras orbis ecclesias filios in fidei orthodoxae fecunditate conspicuos, quemadmodum gallina congregans sub alis suis producere consuevit, pestis ilia execrabilis Lollardiae nonnullos infecit, quae sua labe delatata plus solito invalescit. Et heu, prothdolor, satis et nimis diu schismata, seditiones, et haereses ex hac peste enormiter surrexerunt, cuius profesores demoliri nituntur ecclesiam Christi et loco eius construere ecclesiam malignantium penitus alienam a sacrosancta universali ecclesia. Ac nisi ex diverso, Christianissimi in Christo principis regis nostri nobilissimi zelatoris legis Christi nostrae imbellicitati supportatorum regalis assistentia affiaisset quam in misericordia et mansuetudine corripere conspicimus huiusmodi delinquentes, sine ipso rege nostro illustrissimo inclito Mathathia per dictos intentores nequitiae apostatas legis Dei naviculam nostrae fidei cum toto thesauro sacramentorum ecclesiae tantis procellis totque turbinibus resistere non valentem, deficere timeremus et deficientem perire naufragio per tarn perversos ductores conculcantes Verbi Domini margaritas et ornamenta fidei maculantes, qui quemadmodum vulpes in specibus inter Catholicos ethnici seu saltern Iebusei in nostri medio commoraverunt, contemplantes igitur interiori acie mentis nostrae confratres nostros coepiscopos ecclesiae nostrae sanctae suffraganeos, ne (quod absit) haec plantula pestilens infectiva in rigidam arborem pravitatis excrescat ad obviandum tantis malitiis quam necessarium convocari, ut negotium huiusmodi contra haereticam pravitatem ad Dei gloriam et augmentum fidei nostris temporibus prosperetur, ac haec posse facilius inveniri quae a tot et tantis consiliis remedianda quaeruntur, resolventes etiam quod omnibus in unum congregatis et aequis humeribus unanimiter procedentibus tollemus clamorem populi fortassis erroneae conspicientis quod ex nobis quasi ex nobis habita regali assistentia prout habetur Christianissime Catholica sine singulis confratribus nostris nobiscum convenientibus in unum in causa Dei procedere videremur.
