The first royal writ

Rex venerabili in Christo patri Willelmo, eadem [gratia] archiepiscopo Eboracensi, Angliae primati, salutem. Quia de avisamento concilii [etc. ut supra] nostri et quibusdam arduis et urgentibus negotiis nos, statum et defensionem regni nostri Angliae ac Ecclesiae Anglicanae contingentibus […] ibi, et colloquium habeantur, et tune sic et licet singulis episcopis regni nostri mandaverimus iniungendo quod quilibet eorum praemunire faciat priores, decanos et capitula ecclesiarum suarum cathedralium, necnon archidiaconos et clerum suarum diocesium, quod iidem priores, decani et archidiaconi in propriis personis suis et quodlibet capitulorum praedictorum per unum, clerusque cuiuslibet diocesis per duos procuratores sufficientem potestatem ab ipsis capitulo et clero habentes, dictis die et loco intersint ad faciendum et consentiendum his quae tune ibidem de communi consilio nostro divina favente dementia contigerit ordinari. Nolentes tamen dicta negotia nostra pro defectu praemunitionum praedictarum si forsan minus rite factae fuerint aliqualiter retardari. Vobis mandamus rogantes quatenus praemunire faciatis decanos et capitula ecclesiarum cathedralium ac abbates, priores, archidiaconos et totum clerum provinciae Eboracensis, quod iidem decani, abbates, priores et archidiaconi in propriis personis suis, et quodlibet capitulorum praedictorum per unum, clerusque cuiuslibet diocesis per duos procuratores sufficientem potestatem ab ipsis capitulo et clero habentes sint in dicto die ad parliamentum praedictum ad consentiendum his quae tune ibidem de communi consilio regni nostri ordinari contigerit, sicut praedictum est. Et hoc nullatenus omittatis. Teste custode praedicto apud Windsor, vicesimo sexto die Augusti [26 August 1339]. Per ipsum regem ac dictum custodem et concilium.

Quamvis archiepiscopus Cantuariensis ac ceteri praelati et clerus suae provinciae quandam decimam ultra decimam triennalem iam currentem nobis de bonis suis ecclesiasticis in convocatione ipsius archiepiscopi Cantuariensis de clero suae provinciae praedicto apud ecclesiam Sanctae Brigidae London facta concesserint et terminos solutionis secundi anni dictae decimae triennalis anticipare in auxilium supportationis onerum quae pro defensione Ecclesiae Anglicanae et regni nostri contra hostium invasiones nos oporteret inevitabiliter sustinere, vos ac praelati et clerus dictae vestrae provinciae nihilominus, habitis prius super hoc de mandato nostro diversis convocationibus, et expositis vobis periculis et malis quae manifestius imminebant aliquod subsidium nobis concedere penitus denegatis, unde miramur quamplurimum et movemur praesertim cum dicta defensio sit communis et omnes et singuli de eodem regno tarn clerici quam laici ad dictorum ecclesiae et regni defensionem et salvationem subvenire pro viribus astringantur.
