The royal writ for a parliament on 14 January 1339

Robertus, permissione divina episcopus Cicestrensis, reverendi patris Iohannis, Dei gratia Cantuariensis archiepiscopi, totius Angliae primatis et apostolicae sedis legati in remotis agentis vicarius in spiritualibus generalis, venerabili in Christo patri Domino Richardo, Dei gratia Londoniensi episcopo, salutem et sinceram in Domino caritatem. Septimo die mensis Decembris ultimo praeterito [7 December 1338] apud Aldyngbourne literas regias recepimus sub hac forma:

Edwardus, Dei gratia rex Angliae, dominus Hiberniae et dux Aquitaniae, venerabili in Christo patri Iohanni, eadem gratia archiepiscopo Cantuariensi, totius Angliae primati, salutem. Quia de avisamento concilii nostri ordinavimus quod super arduis et urgentibus negotiis, tarn nos et expeditionem nostram ac iura nostra et coronae nostrae in partibus transmarinis, quam statum et defensionem regni nostri ac aliarum terrarum nostrarum contingentibus, quoddam parliamentum apud Westmonasterium in crastino Sancti Hilarii proximo fururo [14 January 1339] teneatur, et ibidem vobiscum ac cum ceteris praelatis, magnatibus et proceribus dicti regni tractatus et colloquium habeantur, et licet singulis episcopis regni nostri mandaverimus iniungendo quod quilibet eorum praemunire faciat priores, decanos et capitula ecclesiarum suarum cathedralium, necnon archidiaconos et clerum suarum diocesium, quod iidem priores, decani et archidiaconi in propriis personis suis et quodlibet capitulorum praedictorum per unum, clerusque cuiuslibet diocesis per duos procuratores sufficientem potestatem ab ipsis capitulo et clero habentes, dictis die et loco intersint ad faciendum et consentiendum his quae tune ibidem de communi consilio nostro divina favente dementia contigerit ordinari. Nolentes tamen dicta negotia nostra pro defectu praemunitionum praedictarum (si forsan minus rite factae fuerint) aliqualiter retardari, vobis mandamus rogantes quatenus praemunire faciatis decanos et capitula ecclesiarum cathedralium ac abbates, priores, archidiaconos et totum clerum provinciae Cantuariensis, quod iidem decani, abbates, priores et archidiaconi in propriis personis suis, et quodlibet capitulorum praedictorum per unum, clerusque cuiuslibet diocesis per duos procuratores sufficientem potestatem ab ipsis capitulo et clero habentes sint in dicto die ad parliamentum praedictum ad consentiendum his quae tune ibidem de communi consilio regni nostri ordinari contigerit, sicut praedictum est, et hoc nullatenus omittatis. Teste Edwardo duce Cornubiae et comite Cestriae filio nostro carissimo, custode Angliae apud Kennington, quinto decimo die Novembris anno regni nostri duodecimo [15 November 1338]. Per ipsum regem ac dictum custodem et concilium.
