The royal writ excusing the archbishop from personal attendance at a parliament on 11 March

Rex venerabili in Christo patri Willelmo, eadem gratia archiepiscopo Eboracensi, Angliae primati, salutem. Licet nuper vobis per breve nostrum mandaverimus quod cum praelatis et proceribus regni nostri interessetis personaliter in parliamento nostro, die Lunae proximo post Dominicam in medio instantis Quadragesimae apud Westmonasterium ex causis arduis convocato, quia tamen ex testimonio recepimus fidedigno quod estis causis legitimis impediti quominus praesentiam vestram ibidem tune exhibere poteritis personalem, vobis significamus quod absentiam vestram ex causis praedictis ibidem habere volumus excusatam, dumtamen illuc procuratorem habeatis idoneum loco vestri. Teste rege apud Westmonasterium, quarto die Martii [4 March 1336].

Willelmus, permissione divina Eboracensis archiepiscopus, Angliae primas, venerabili in Christo fratri Domino Iohanni, Dei gratiae Carliolensi episcopo, suffraganeo nostro, vel eius vicario in spiritualibus, salutem et fraternae caritatis in Domino continuum incrementum. Literas domini nostri regis recepimus in Haec verba:

Edwardus, Dei gratia rex Angliae, dominus Hiberniae et dux Aquitaniae, venerabili in Christo patri Willelmo, eadem gratia archiepiscopo Eboracensi Angliae primati, salutem. Regnum et sacerdotium, velut ab uno procedentia principio Iesu Christo, illam sibi vendicant unionem, ut in opportunitatibus alterutrum gaudeant se mutuis subsidiis praevenire; cum regnum auctoritate sacerdotali dirigatur spiritualiter ad salutem, et sacerdotium brachio regiae potentiae temporaliter defendetur. Vestra siquidem paternitas bene novit qualiter ad partes Scotiae de vestro et aliorum praelatorum ac magnatum regni nostri consilio, ad compescendam Scotorum inimicorum nostrorum malitiam, qui contra nos ibidem de guerra hostiliter surrexerunt; et nos super manu forti transtulimus, propriis non parcentes laboribus, sed infmitam quodammodo pecuniam, sicut oportuit, effundentes, ut iura coronae nostrae defenderemus magnifice, ac ecclesiae et cunctis nostris subditis quietis pulchritudinem, subactis hostibus, pararemus.
