The archbishop's mandate to the prior and chapter of Canterbury

Walterus, permissione divina [Cantuariensis archiepiscopus, totius Angliae primas] dilectis in Christo filiis priori et capitulo ecclesiae nostrae Christi Cantuariensis, salutem, gratiam et benedictionem. Hostilis iniquitas suae malignitatis impulsus, exercens ecclesiam ac regnum Angliae eiusque incolas hostium exercitus et ceterorum in cursionibus diutius circumcinxit et ad peiora suos conatus extendens civilis disidii tempestuosum (prothdolor!) turbinem iam discussit recissa amicabilis foederis unitate. Ad occurrendum itaque male huiusmodi ex quo ecclesiae atque regni magnum et instans posse timetur periculum imminere, nos licet anxii et inviti, impellimur extra propositum praeconceptum praelatos et clerum nostrae Cantuariensis provinciae per similia de quo dolemus et angimur saepius fatigatos prout cum quibusdam nostris coepiscopis deliberatione praehabita censuimus convocare.

Quocirca vobis committimus et mandamus quatenus vos, domine prior, personaliter, ac capitulum per unum procuratorem compareatis coram nobis in ecclesia Sancti Pauli Londoniarum, die Iovis, videlicet in crastino festi Sancti Petri in cathedra proximo futuro [23 February 1318], cum continuatione et prorogatione dierum subsequentium, ad tractandum una nobiscum super urgentibus Ecclesiae Anglicanae atque regni negotiis, necnon consentiendum his omnibus quae ad honorem Dei et ecclesiae suae sanctae, ac utilitatem totius reipublicae regnique supradicti, divina disponente dementia, ibidem contigerit salubriter ordinari. De die vero receptionis praesentium ac modo et forma executionis quam feceritis in hac parte, nos dictis die et loco certificare curetis per vestras patentes literas harum seriem continentes. Datum apud Mailing, decimo octavo Kalendarum Februarii anno Domini MCCCXVII [15 January 1318].

The execution of the above in Winchester diocese

On 20 January 1318, the bishop of Winchester, writing from Southwark, ordered his archdeacons and to the prior and chapter of Winchester, to execute the above mandate and to certify the result to him by 14 February 1318.

On 22 February 1318 he appointed the following as his proctors, since he himself was hindered from attending because of a serious bodily illness:

Iacobus de Florentia, archdeacon of Winchester.

Henricus de Clyfe, dean of the collegiate church of Tamworth and the bishop's chancellor.
