Summary

The pupillary light reflex can be described in more precise terms than the common designations of brisk, sluggish, or absent. Algorithms to evaluate the quality of reflex such as the NPi and the QPi are discussed in this chapter. An introduction to the effects of sedative drugs, body temperature, and hypoxia are summarized. The various components of the “light on” reflex are described, with special emphasis on the importance of pupil size in determining the quality of the reflex.
