Summary

The semantic theories Frege and Tarski constructed for certain formal languages assign values to complex expressions that are determined by the values assigned to their constituents and the rules used to combine those constituents. Standard semantic theories tend to assume that natural languages also share this characteristic, i.e. that they are compositional. This chapter discusses the precise content of this assumption and the motivations behind it.
