The way a king out hunting will pick up
a drinking glass (it could be any glass),
and then, as though it were some sacred cup,
its owner hides it under locks of brass:
perhaps Fate, also thirsty, now and then
will drink a woman lifted to its lips.
Some little life — far too afraid of slips
and breaking — keeps her far away from men
and use. He locks her in that timorous case
where all his treasures lie (or to be kind,
those things he thinks are priceless treasures). There
she stayed, like something lent from some far place,
and turned to what was only old and blind,
and was not precious, and was never rare.
Die Genesende
Wie ein Singen kommt und geht in Gassen
und sich nähert und sich wieder scheut,
flügelschlagend, manchmal fast zu fassen
und dann wieder weit hinausgestreut:
spielt mit der Genesenden das Leben;
während sie, geschwächt und ausgeruht,
unbeholfen, um sich hinzugeben,
eine ungewohnte Geste tut.
Und sie fühlt es beinah wie Verführung,
wenn die hartgewordne Hand, darin
Fieber waren voller Widersinn,
fernher, wie mit blühender Berührung,
zu liebkosen kommt ihr hartes Kinn.
