Versailles
Like kings who in the end step forth for no
real reason, or to show their subjects, now
and then, how solitude's thick mantles flow
on kings’ backs, as on both sides, subjects bow:
that's how these stairs ascend — alone, and slowly
between the balustrades long bowing there;
and by the grace of God, on toward the holy
heavens, yet leading no one anywhere.
It is as if they had commanded their
whole entourage to fall back and remain,
lest any follow from afar — or dare.
Not even one, to bear the heavy train.
Der Marmor- Karren
Paris
Auf Pferde, sieben ziehende, verteilt,
verwandelt Niebewegtes sich in Schritte;
denn was hochmütig in des Marmors Mitte
an Alter, Widerstand und All verweilt,
