from Part I - Neue Gedichte / New Poems

These gentlemen: how all around they are,
like liveried chamberlains in their jabots,
or like a night around its central star,
darkening more and more, oh, recklessly.
And then these fragile ladies, who can be
so large when gowned: they leave one lap hand free,
small as the collar of a bichon frise.
How they surround each reader at his ease,
each keen peruser of these bibelots
that are — some few — their own belongings yet.
Tactful, they have made up their minds to let
us live life undisturbed, as we see fit
(and as they fail to). Yes, to bloom is fair
(their wish). But ripening's ours, and we know it
demands that we be dark … and take great care.
Letzter Abend
