Named after George Gilles de la Tourette who published an in-depth description of the disorder in 1885, Tourette syndrome (TS) is a pediatric tic disorder with a 3:1 male predominance. Though there is ample evidence that tic disorders are often familial, research has not found a definitive gene associated with the inheritance of TS. Many theories exist about the pathogenesis of TS, most of which center around the hypothesis that there is some sort of dopamine abnormality in the striatum, a pathogenesis that is supported by the fact that tics more commonly occur in patients with dopamine irregularity such as patients with Parkinson disease or Huntington disease.
