Summary
The phrenic nerves originate from nerve roots C3–C5 and, after formation from these roots, descend bilaterally through the thorax, anterior to the root of the lung, and pass adjacent to the heart on the way to the diaphragm. The phrenic nerves provide sensory innervation to the pericardium, mediastinal and diaphragmatic pleura, and central tendon of the diaphragm, as well as motor innervation to the diaphragm.
