Summary
The retina is a thin layer of sensory neurons lining the posterior-most two-thirds of the inner eyeball. The retina functions specifically to sense light energy in the form of photons coming in from the environment through the lens and processing it into neuronal signals. The retina and the optic nerve are derived from the diencephalon.
