Summary
The long thoracic nerve is a pure motor nerve with fibers from nerve roots C5 through C7. It descends posteriorly through the roots of the brachial plexus, emerging between the middle and posterior scalene muscles, then travels along the outer lateral thoracic wall along the midaxillary line just superficial to the serratus anterior muscles. The sole function of the long thoracic nerve is to provide motor innervation to the serratus anterior muscle.
