Summary
Hardware hacking and circuit bending are the art of customising electronic circuits for sound production. This chapter aims to provide a historical overview and some practical tips for those who are seriously interested in tinkering with electronics for musical purposes!
Precedents
Hardware hacking involves intervening in or tampering with electronic hardware, as well as introducing transducers or found objects into the audio chain for unexpected filtering effects. Some hardware hackers have also acquired a taste for eavesdropping on the sounds of electromagnetism as picked up by transducers placed on unsuspecting hardware and use this in their artistic production (bringing observation into performance!).
