In 1905, a team of medical researchers based in Northeast India made an incision in the corpse of a middle-aged man who had complained of chest pain before his death. Finding raised bumps throughout the chest cavity, the surgeons experimented with applying different substances to the rash. One treatment cleared the problem immediately, and the findings were written up and published in a periodical along with a call for other tests to replicate the results.
