Summary
Obstetrics is a broad-based specialty requiring expertise in a number of different disciplines, including internal medicine, general surgery, psychiatry, and family medicine. The authors have designed this text to give the reader a succinct yet comprehensive overview of obstetrics using a user-friendly format that is easy to navigate. The text covers topics related to maternal and fetal medicine (such as maternal cardiac and endocrine disorders, infections in pregnancy, and obstetric ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis) as well as clinical questions that will challenge providers both in the outpatient setting (multiple pregnancy, placenta previa, gestational diabetes) and on labor and delivery (such as induction of labor, intrapartum fetal testing, and cesarean delivery to name just a few). Special attention has been paid to incorporating an evidence-based approach to obstetric management, and a number of chapters have been included to assist in the management of obstetric emergencies such as shoulder dystocia, eclampsia, and postpartum hemorrhage. It is the sincere hope of the authors that this text will provide the requisite depth and breadth of knowledge needed to diagnose and manage clinical problems that face obstetric care providers on a daily basis both in the clinic and on labor and delivery.
