With FitzRalph and Brinton, Philip Repingdon is the third bishop who made an important and extant contribution to preaching in our period. In contrast to them, however, he stood considerably closer to the dividing line between orthodoxy and Lollardism – or rather, he found himself at Oxford at the moment when Wyclif's teaching and the serious desire for reform that lay behind it began to cause public concern. As an Augustinian canon from Leicester, Repingdon was sent to the university and incepted in theology in 1382. In that crucial year of his life he was asked by chancellor Rigg, who sympathized strongly with Wyclif's teaching and for a while was unwilling to listen to warnings from Canterbury, to deliver the Corpus Christi sermon at the Augustinian priory of St. Frideswide. In it Repingdon defended Wyclif's doctrine on the Eucharist. This and other positions proved too much for Archbishop Courtenay, who had him suspended from preaching and from all academic acts. During the year, then, Repingdon had several confrontations with Church authority. As he failed to appear at a later meeting with the archbishop, he was excommunicated. By the late fall, however, he abjured his heterodox views and was allowed to return to his academic functions. A distinguished career in the English Church followed. In 1394 Repingdon became abbot of St. Mary-in-the-Meadows, Leicester. He served as chancellor of Oxford University in 1400, and in 1404 he was appointed to the see of Lincoln, which he resigned in 1419.
