Summary

Latin American “costumbrismo” needs to be understood as a complex form of ethnography intended to evoke emotions that could mobilize readers politically. This aspect of the genre has not been easy to see, however. Twentieth-century cultural and literary critics tended to dismiss Latin American costumbrismo.
