Summary
My first encounter with Lady Hale was (appropriately as it turns out) at my first biennial conference of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), held in Sydney in 2006. She was at that time the sole woman on the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords, afterwards becoming the sole woman on the Supreme Court until joined by Lady Black in 2017 and Lady Arden in 2018. Lady Hale was therefore the sole woman on the United Kingdom’s highest court for thirteen years. This is not a distinction she would have envisaged in 2006 and certainly would not be one she cherishes.
