Summary
Lax pairs are formulated in differential algebraic terms, their usefulness in connection with integrals is reviewed, and a general approach to their construction is suggested. No prior familiarity with these entities is assumed. Concrete applications are included, the final one involving a curious geodesic equatlon which is "almost'' in Hamiltonian form w.r.t. an "almost'' symplectic structure.
