Summary
This study is an initial attempt to construct a Caribbean diasporan ecclesiology using the Caribbean diasporan experience as a source for theological discourse. While the study may not provide adequate answers to all concerned persons, the intent is to understand the theological meaning of the Caribbean diasporan experience. Thus, the study has sought to answer the question: How do Caribbean people understand themselves as the people of God?
From Whence Have We Come?
Using the Caribbean diasporan experience as a source of theological discourse, I attempted to answer the question in the following manner: After delineating the structure of the study, including my personal formative experiences, a constructive meaning of the term diaspora and the approach of undertaking this study, I explored the significance of engaging the Caribbean diasporan experience as a source for theological discourse. Chapter 1 addressed the omission of this experience from African American theology and the status of and need for the development of a Caribbean diaspora theological scholarship.
The study further unearthed three forms of Caribbean diasporan identity, namely, the cultural, cosmopolitan and Caribamerican. These are not mutually exclusive but rather interrelated identities. I argued, however, for an identity that encompasses the Caribbean diaspora in North America, noting at the same time that identity is not fixed but evolutionary.
The study also explored the theological foundations of the Caribbean diasporan church.
