Summary
Note
The following appendix is divided into two sections. The first (section (a)y pp. 264–82) lists the judges commissioned to hold assizes in each of the six English circuits from 1559 to 1714. It is followed by the notes to this section. In order to keep these and the principal list itself as simple as possible and to assist identification an alphabetical list of the 214 men known to have ridden circuit during this period is added (pp. 285–93). This gives the judges' full names, the dates of their promotions within the profession, and, where known, of their deaths. The spelling of surnames throughout follows E. Foss, The Judges of England, 9 vols. (1848–64), from which the details presented in section (b) are abstracted. The information listed in section (a) is drawn from several sources. The names of the commissioners of oyer and terminer and of gaol delivery are included among those enrolled on the Patent Rolls (C 66) for 1561/2, 1563/4, 1593/4, 1639/40, and intermittently temp. Chas. II until 1665/6. Docquets for commissions, noting all four commissions and the two judges for each circuit, for 1595–1721 are entered in the Crown Office Docquet Books (Index 4208–4216). The information given there is, however, incomplete. Index 4209, covering the years 1603–19, is a docquet book for purveyance only; Index 4210 appears to be a copy of the original docquet book (in the Bodleian) created by the Royalist Crown Office and printed in Docquets of Letters Patent…1642–46, ed. W. H. Black (1837).
