Summary

If there is no struggle, there is no progress.

—Frederick Douglass

I can honestly say that I was never affected by the question of the success of an undertaking. If I felt it was the right thing to do, I was for it regardless of the possible outcome.

—Golda Meir

By 2006, SCDD had grown from a very small clinical program within the Department of Pediatrics to a multifaceted intercollegiate center with international partners and significant local, regional, national, and international impact. Its programs had been expanded to include services and supports, interdisciplinary training, and both basic and clinical research. Yet transformational growth was still to come.

In 2006, after 30 years of directing SCDD and 25 years as Division Chief, Dr. Davidson stepped aside to assume leadership of the Seychelles Child Development Study and pursue other research goals. At the same time as Dr. Davidson moved away from SCDD leadership, Christine Burns stepped aside as Associate Division Chief to assume pediatric department responsibilities and to work on coordination of care projects at the departmental level until her untimely death in 2016. Dr. Sulkes assumed responsibility for directing the UCEDD in 2007. This appointment assured federal funders of leadership continuity, an important issue since the UCEDD competing renewal application was due in 2008. It was renewed in 2009. Soon thereafter, Dr. Hetherington became UCEDD codirector; and in 2014 she took over as UCEDD Director. Dr. Sulkes remained as UCEDD Co-Director and director of the LEND program until 2019.

After a year of interim leadership by Nina Schor, MD, PhD, the newly arrived chair of Pediatrics a Child Neurologist, Dr. Hyman was appointed to succeed Dr. Davidson as Division Chief. Prior to her appointment as Chief, Dr. Hyman negotiated a change in the administrative structure of the Division to include a focus in both developmental and behavioral pediatrics. It was renamed the Division of Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (NDBP) and became the academic home of the UCEDD (still named SCDD). SCDD remained a major administrative component of NDBP and was responsible for advocacy programs and many community- based activities. This was a big change for everyone concerned; it took some time to work out the management details.
