Summary

Hundreds of thousands of people crossed the border in both directions, making Partition not only an exercise in spatial demarcation, but also a horrifying personal and social disaster. The fallout of Partition migration is still noticeable in Bangladesh today: divided and trauma-scarred families, people occupying houses and land abandoned by emigrants, ruined palaces, crumbling Hindu temples, and linguistic and religious minorities forever hovering between fight and flight.
