Respiratory symptoms are common in pregnancy, and it is important to differentiate normal physiological gestation adaptations from warning signs of more serious underlying pathology. Women with significant underlying respiratory disease can be at risk of clinical deterioration during pregnancy and should be aware of the potential consequences for themselves and their baby in order to make informed family planning choices. In contrast, women with mild respiratory problems typically tolerate pregnancy well and should be encouraged to optimize their treatment to achieve the best pregnancy outcomes.
