Summary

Georges Ripert is one of the most important and influential French jurists of the twentieth century. A respected civil lawyer, dean of the Paris Law Faculty, continuator of Marcel Planiol’s work, and author of several essays on contemporary transformations of the law, he joined the Vichy regime and served for a few months as secretary of state for public instruction and youth. This political commitment durably tarnished his reputation as a law professor. Politically conservative, Ripert distinguished himself by taking original and vigorous legal positions in a series of highly acclaimed essays. A resolute opponent of natural law, he nevertheless defended the influence of Catholic morality on the law. He was a fine connoisseur of social and human sciences and firmly promoted the specificity and autonomy of the legal discipline.
