Summary
Introduction
Trustees have a responsibility under pensions legislation to ensure that pensions administration is run effectively, whether it is carried out by the sponsoring employer or by a third-party administrator (TPA). However, frequently, pensions administration gets relatively little attention from trustee boards, compared to other trustee responsibilities such as investment and funding.
Errors and maladministration can damage scheme, employer and trustee reputation. Furthermore, errors can be very costly to resolve, involving significant effort from trustees, lawyers and other advisers.
