Summary
Reviews recent developments in genre theory, with stress on the flexibility and historical contingency of genres and on the importance of function in the definition of genres. Explores how this understanding of genre can serve as a useful framework for analysis of different types of rewriting in early Judaism, by considering how rewriting might vary according to the genre of the text being rewritten, as well as how different types of rewriting might themselves function analogously to genres.
