Summary
The world’s population is ageing rapidly, with the proportion of people aged 60 years or over growing faster than any other age group. Estimates from the United Nations indicate that the number of people older than 60 years will rise from 962 million in 2017 to 2.1 billion in 2050 and 3.1 billion by 2100 (United Nations, 2017). The number of persons aged 80 years or above will triple by 2050 and will increase more than seven times by 2100 compared with 2017 (United Nations, 2015; 2017). Women continue to outnumber men in the older age groups, although the probability of survival to age 60 and 80 years is increasing more rapidly in men than women (United Nations, 2015). As a consequence, the life expectancy gap between men and women is expected to continue to narrow over the coming decades.
