Summary
THE LAST SUNDAY OF AUGUST 1888 saw Nietzsche drafting the very last plan for his main philosophical work that was to have been entitled The Will to Power (Der Wille zur Macht). This was to be endowed with the subtitle Attempt at a Revaluation of Values (Versuch einer Umwertung aller Werte). To the credit of Mazzino Montinari and the critical edition of Nietzsche's works, there can no longer be any doubt that Nietzsche subsequently abandoned The Will to Power and replaced it with a project under the former subtitle, Revaluation of Values (Umwertung aller Werte). As a letter to Heinrich Köselitz (the friend whom Nietzsche renamed Peter Gast) from 13 February 1888 indicates, Nietzsche was already writing a text under this title at the beginning of the very same year: “I have finished the first draft of my ‘Attempt of a Revaluation’: it was, all in all, a torture, besides I really don't have the courage for it at the moment. I will make it better in ten years' time. —” (Ich habe die erste Niederschrift meines “Versuchs einer Umwertung” fertig: es war, Alles in Allem, ein Tortur, auch habe ich durchaus noch nicht den Muth dazu. Zehn Jahre später will ichs besser machen. —; KSB 8, 252). After having given up his project of The Will to Power, Nietzsche returned to the Revaluation of Values earlier than anticipated, in September 1888.
