Summary

The commonest reason for retrieval to a PICU in the UK is respiratory failure; however, a smaller percentage of children present with isolated or concurrent cardiovascular collapse. These children are often described as ‘Shocked’ that is to say there is inadequate oxygen delivery and utilisation by cells of the body. There are multiple causes of shock in paediatric patients with different treatment approaches; however, the ultimate goal is to restore oxygen delivery to the organs in need.
