Summary
Chronic pain ranks among the top causes of years lived with disability worldwide [1]. Management is challenging because it is difficult to relieve pain as a sensation. Analgesics play a limited role and can be harmful, for example opioid prescription in chronic pain is now linked to considerable harm and even deaths through overdose. Depression and anxiety disorders are common in patients with chronic pain, hence management may require joint expertise from multiple healthcare disciplines.
