Summary
What are intelligent people like? The goal of this chapter is to outline the relationships between personality and intelligence. First the correlations between personality and intelligence at the phenotypic (observed) level will be described. This section will include personality trait and factor studies as well as recent research examining the relationship between general intelligence and the General Factor of Personality (GFP). Then we discuss how intelligence and personality may be jointly influenced developmentally and we conclude with a summary of behavior genetic studies which have examined the correlations between personality and intelligence at the genetic and environmental levels. This chapter concludes with a review of how each construct influences responses to the other measures, in particular, how personality is more differentiated (variable) at higher levels of intelligence and how intelligence score variability possibly differs for individuals with certain personality profiles.
