This chapter presents a variety of perspectives for the researcher to consider prior to making choices as to what aspects of social support, social network and/or social capital they want to measure. Dimensions to consider for choosing a measurement instrument include objective versus subjective evaluations of these matters, qualitative versus quantitative, and observation versus self- or other-report. Other dimensions of support recognize dual requirements of development and functioning with others. Support in relation to autonomy as well as support in relation to control is two important conceptual considerations for the study and assessment of support. Adaptations in measuring social support or networks have been made to accommodate linguistic differences across samples, the amount of time available to assess, variations in the local culture and sensitivities and variations in age and developmental status of respondent.
