The Camberwell Assessment of Need (CAN) is a family of standardised measures for assessing the wide range of problems that can be experienced by a person with severe mental health problems. Every CAN version covers 22 different areas of life and can be used to assess the perceptions of a mental health service user, their carer and their mental health worker about the service user’s needs. Four versions of CAN are available: a short version (CANSAS), a short patient-rated version (CANSAS-P), a clinical version (CAN-C) and a research version (CAN-R).
