Book description

Bipolar depression is now known to exist as a spectrum of disorders rather than a single disease entity. Bipolar II Disorder exists on this spectrum as a condition where the depressive episodes are as severe as in Bipolar I Disorder, but where the mood elevation states are not as extreme. This unexpected combination can lead to a failure to detect a condition thought to affect up to 6% of the population. This book reviews, for the first time, our knowledge of this debilitating disorder, covering its history, classification and neurobiology. In a unique section, fourteen internationally recognised experts debate management strategies, building to some consensus, and resulting in treatment guidelines where no such advice currently exists. It should be read by all health professionals managing mood disorders and will be informative to those wishing to learn more about the condition.

Reviews

'If you are looking for a book that gives you the way to understand and treat bipolar II then Dr Parker's regimen may well be what you are looking for. … The quality and experience of the people giving advice and care to those with bipolar II is a vital issue, particularly at this time when a nice recipe book is not available. Dr Parker clearly demonstrates that he is in touch with this vital issue.'

'The book provides a very good overview about what we know about bipolar II disorder and does not hesitate to make it clear to the reader and to discuss that most what we think we know about this disorder is based on what we know about bipolar I disorder. … I truly think that this book is a helpful resource for clinicians and provides a well-written introduction into bipolar II disorder for researchers from different points of view.'

'… a pleasure to read and review … my opinion in many areas has shifted and I feel armed with a better tool to take to the consulting room to help my patients, their families and myself tackle the task of treatment and recovery. … the lucidity of the work makes it suitable for both trainees and experts alike. The interested consumer or carer will also find it beneficial and its language is largely approachable. I can recommend it to my colleagues and affirm that it now has a place on my shelf of valued references.'
