Though Culture and Imperialism conceived European empire as a unified structure of domination that realist fiction passively reproduced, Said’s core notion of contrapuntal rereading remains an important premise for millennial readers of nineteenth-century fiction. To make this case, this chapter explores Austen’s Mansfield Park as an ideal starting point for revision. From Austen to the Victorian-era works of Wilkie Collins, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, and others, nineteenth-century fiction includes an archive of formal experiments in the geopolitical aesthetic that emerged in conjunction with an expanding world-system driven partly by the globalization of capital.
