Summary
Almost 12,000 years ago, global warming signalled the end of the last great Ice Age and the start of the current interglacial era known as the Holocene. Prior to that, human settlement was concentrated in small hunter/gatherer/fisher communities scattered throughout the tropical and semi-tropical regions, and to their north in geographical pockets such as the Mediterranean basin, which benefitted from more hospitable conditions.
