Summary

Special populations such as older adults, pregnant and postpartum individuals, LGBTQIA+ individuals, those with co-occurring conditions, children, people of color, and athletes may require additional considerations and research for the treatment of co-occurring OCD and EDs. These populations may have specific challenges and experiences that impact their mental health and treatment outcomes. Additionally, a therapist’s lack of confidence, training, and contraindications in treatment methods need to be considered. Despite evidence-based treatment, many clinicians may not be familiar or comfortable with these methods. Other variables, such as medical stability, abuse, and family dynamics, may also complicate treatment. Overall, more research is needed to address these special populations and circumstances.
