Summary
The immune system and its modulation are considered integral to successful pregnancies, balancing regulation of inflammation and establishment of maternal tolerance. It is no surprise, therefore that it could be considered as potentially involved in unsuccessful pregnancies where no obvious cause is evident. Recent technological advances have led to the possibility of examining immune cell heterogeneity in great detail. The relevance of this analysis to general patients is certainly questionable; however, patient subgroups may well benefit from investigations of this type and subsequent pharmacological or nutraceutical interventions.
