Cambridge Themes in British Literature and Culture puts urgent contemporary questions into historical perspective. The series asks what literature can tell us about how we got to where we are, and what can be learnt from how writers of the past grappled with the pressing issues of their time. In an age of cultural amnesia, these volumes examine the backstory: exploring the origins of ideas, questions and anxieties that shaped, and continue to shape, the national imaginary. From the writing of crisis to that of consolidation, the series reveals the role played by literature in the mediation and management of cultural change.
