The Cambridge Monographs on Applied and Computational Mathematics publishes expositions on all aspects of applicable, numerical and computational mathematics. The series represents the growth in applications of mathematical and numerical techniques to problems from all areas of science. State-of-the-art methods and algorithms as well as modern mathematical descriptions of contemporary physical and mechanical ideas are presented in a manner suited to graduate research students and professionals. Sound pedagogical presentation is a prerequisite. It is intended that the books in the series will serve to inform a new generation of researchers.

  • Recovering the phase of the Fourier transform is a ubiquitous problem in imaging applications from astronomy to nanoscale X-ray diffraction imaging. Despite the efforts of a multitude of scientists, from astronomers to mathematicians, there is, as yet, no satisfactory theoretical or algorithmic solution to this class of problems. Written for mathematicians, physicists and engineers working in image analysis and reconstruction, this book introduces a conceptual, geometric framework for the analysis of these problems, leading to a deeper understanding of the essential, algorithmically independent, difficulty of their solutions.   • Quasi-interpolation is one of the most useful and often applied methods for the approximation of functions and data in mathematics and applications. Its advantages are manifold: quasi-interpolants are able to approximate in any number of dimensions, they are efficient and relatively easy to formulate for scattered and meshed nodes and for any number of data. This book provides an introduction into the field for graduate students and researchers, outlining all the mathematical background and methods of implementation.   • Mathematical and numerical modelling of the human cardiovascular system has attracted remarkable research interest due to its intrinsic mathematical difficulty and the increasing impact of cardiovascular diseases worldwide. This book addresses the two principal components of the cardiovascular system: arterial circulation and heart function. It systematically describes all aspects of the problem, stating the basic physical principles, analysing the associated mathematical models that comprise PDE and ODE systems, reviewing sound and efficient numerical methods for their approximation, and simulating both benchmark problems and clinically inspired problems. Mathematical modelling itself imposes tremendous challenges, due to the amazing complexity of the cardiovascular system and the need for computational methods that are stable, reliable and efficient. The final part is devoted to control and inverse problems, including parameter estimation, uncertainty quantification and the development of reduced-order models that are important when solving problems with high complexity, which would otherwise be out of reach.

  • This book combines a comprehensive state-of-the-art analysis of bifurcations of discrete-time dynamical systems with concrete instruction on implementations (and example applications) in the free MATLAB® software MatContM developed by the authors. While self-contained and suitable for independent study, the book is also written with users in mind and is an invaluable reference for practitioners. Part I focuses on theory, providing a systematic presentation of bifurcations of fixed points and cycles of finite-dimensional maps, up to and including cases with two control parameters. Several complementary methods, including Lyapunov exponents, invariant manifolds and homoclinic structures, and parts of chaos theory, are presented. Part II introduces MatContM through step-by-step tutorials on how to use the general numerical methods described in Part I for simple dynamical models defined by one- and two-dimensional maps.   • This self-contained, systematic treatment of multivariate approximation begins with classical linear approximation, and moves on to contemporary nonlinear approximation. It covers substantial new developments in the linear approximation theory of classes with mixed smoothness, and shows how it is directly related to deep problems in other areas of mathematics. For example, numerical integration of these classes is closely related to discrepancy theory and to nonlinear approximation with respect to special redundant dictionaries, and estimates of the entropy numbers of classes with mixed smoothness are closely related to (in some cases equivalent to) the Small Ball Problem from probability theory. The useful background material included in the book makes it accessible to graduate students. Researchers will find that the many open problems in the theory outlined in the book provide helpful directions and guidance for their own research in this exciting and active area.

  • Nonlinear waves are pervasive in nature, but are often elusive when they are modelled and analysed. This book develops a natural approach to the problem based on phase modulation. It is both an elaboration of the use of phase modulation for the study of nonlinear waves and a compendium of background results in mathematics, such as Hamiltonian systems, symplectic geometry, conservation laws, Noether theory, Lagrangian field theory and analysis, all of which combine to generate the new theory of phase modulation. While the build-up of theory can be intensive, the resulting emergent partial differential equations are relatively simple. A key outcome of the theory is that the coefficients in the emergent modulation equations are universal and easy to calculate. This book gives several examples of the implications in the theory of fluid mechanics and points to a wide range of new applications.

  • This book is concerned with digital image processing techniques that use partial differential equations (PDEs) for the task of image 'inpainting', an artistic term for virtual image restoration or interpolation, whereby missing or occluded parts in images are completed based on information provided by intact parts. Computer graphic designers, artists and photographers have long used manual inpainting to restore damaged paintings or manipulate photographs.   • The recent appearance of wavelets as a new computational tool in applied mathematics has given a new impetus to the field of numerical analysis of Fredholm integral equations. This book gives an account of the state of the art in the study of fast multiscale methods for solving these equations based on wavelets.   • This first book on greedy approximation gives a systematic presentation of the fundamental results. It also contains an introduction to two hot topics in numerical mathematics: learning theory and compressed sensing. Nonlinear approximation is becoming increasingly important, especially since two types are frequently employed in applications: adaptive methods are used in PDE solvers, while m-term approximation is used in image/signal/data processing, as well as in the design of neural networks. The fundamental question of nonlinear approximation is how to devise good constructive methods (algorithms) and recent results have established that greedy type algorithms may be the solution. The author has drawn on his own teaching experience to write a book ideally suited to graduate courses. The reader does not require a broad background to understand the material.   • This book explains recent results in the theory of moving frames that concern the symbolic manipulation of invariants of Lie group actions. In particular, theorems concerning the calculation of generators of algebras of differential invariants, and the relations they satisfy, are discussed in detail. The author demonstrates how new ideas lead to significant progress in two main applications: the solution of invariant ordinary differential equations and the structure of Euler-Lagrange equations and conservation laws of variational problems. The expository language used here is primarily that of undergraduate calculus rather than differential geometry, making the topic more accessible to a student audience. More sophisticated ideas from differential topology and Lie theory are explained from scratch using illustrative examples and exercises. This book is ideal for graduate students and researchers working in differential equations, symbolic computation, applications of Lie groups and, to a lesser extent, differential geometry.

Algebraic Geometry and Statistical Learning Theory

  • Sure to be influential, this book lays the foundations for the use of algebraic geometry in statistical learning theory. Many widely used statistical models and learning machines applied to information science have a parameter space that is singular: mixture models, neural networks, HMMs, Bayesian networks, and stochastic context-free grammars are major examples. Algebraic geometry and singularity theory provide the necessary tools for studying such non-smooth models. Four main formulas are established: 1. the log likelihood function can be given a common standard form using resolution of singularities, even applied to more complex models; 2. the asymptotic behaviour of the marginal likelihood or 'the evidence' is derived based on zeta function theory; 3. new methods are derived to estimate the generalization errors in Bayes and Gibbs estimations from training errors; 4. the generalization errors of maximum likelihood and a posteriori methods are clarified by empirical process theory on algebraic varieties.
