  • 'Stow's Survey' is a historical work readily identified by this familiar name alone. John Stow (c.1524–1605) was a Londoner, a member of the Merchant Taylors' Company, but spent most of his life accumulating manuscripts and other historical records. His great work, A Survey of London, was published in 1603, and is reissued here in the two-volume version edited by C. L. Kingsford (1862–1926) and published in 1908. Kingsford, a government education official, was also a writer for the Dictionary of National Biography, to which he contributed over 300 entries. His Chronicles of London (also reissued in this series) was published in 1905. In Volume 1, Kingsford's preface explains his editorial practice; he also provides an introduction including documents illustrative of Stow's family background and life, and a bibliography of sources. Stow's text begins with general essays on London's history, and follows with a ward-by-ward description.

  • James Anthony Froude (1818–94), historian and disciple of Carlyle, published this twelve-volume history of the English Reformation between 1858 and 1870. The work is shaped by Froude's firm belief that the Reformation enabled the development of modernity and the rise of 'progressive intelligence' in England. His polemical stance was criticised by some historians, but his engaging narrative style and elegant prose made his work extremely popular with the general public, and the books were highly influential. The first six volumes consider the course of the Reformation from the break with Rome until the accession of Elizabeth I in 1558, and the remaining six recount the reign of Elizabeth I, ending with the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Volume 8 goes back to consider the condition of Ireland during Mary I's reign, the rise of the English navy, and the significance of Mary Stuart.

  • The historian John Strype (1643–1737) published the fourth and final volume of his monumental Elizabethan religious history Annals of the Reformation in 1731. For over two and a half centuries it remained one of the most important Protestant histories of the period and has been reprinted in numerous editions. Volume 4 is a rich collection of primary sources, covering the final years of Elizabeth I's reign and the first years of the reign of James I. The sources concern the continued threats from Spain; religious dissidence in England; episcopal organisation and the transference of power to James I. The sources, transcribed by Strype, include state papers, official proclamations, royal records, and letters. Strype's thorough use of sources and the enormous scope and detail of his history has ensured its place as an outstanding work of eighteenth-century scholarship. It should be read by every student of Elizabethan religious history.

  • The ecclesiastical historian John Strype (1643–1737) published the third volume of his monumental Elizabethan religious history Annals of the Reformation in 1728. For over two and a half centuries it remained one of the most important Protestant histories of the period and has been reprinted in numerous editions. Volume 3 Part 1 covers the years 1581 to 1587. It focuses on diplomacy with Spain and the build up to the attack of the Spanish Armada; relations with Scotland and the trial and execution of Mary Queen of Scots; friendship with the Low Countries and other Protestant allies in Europe; and works of religious polemic and the death of John Fox in 1587. Strype's thorough use of sources and the enormous scope and detail of his history has ensured its place as an outstanding work of eighteenth-century scholarship. Continuing Brewer's method of ordering chronologically all available documents from 1509 to 1547, and reproducing some passages while paraphrasing or omitting others, Gairdner brought the project to its conclusion, aided himself by R. H. Brodie (1859–1943) in preparing the later volumes. Part 1 of Volume 2 (1864) has been split into two for this reissue: this second half covers the period from November 1515 to December 1516.

  • First published in 1906, this work was one of the first and most important Ricardian apologias for a general readership. A distinguished geographer, whose long career had involved voyaging to the Arctic in search of Sir John Franklin, as well as travels in Peru and India, Sir Clements Markham (1830–1916) had played a crucial role in launching Scott's first expedition to Antarctica in 1901. Markham also had a long-standing interest in the reputation of England's last Plantagenet king. The first part of this book presents the life of Richard, while the second half is devoted to a thorough examination of the charges laid against the monarch by the Tudors and later historians. Markham seeks to expose these charges as unfair and unfounded. The work also includes genealogical tables and a map of the Battle of Bosworth Field.

Derived in large part from the archives at Simancas, they have been carefully edited and translated into English by Martin Andrew Sharp Hume (1843–1910), a respected historian of Spain and a scrupulous archival researcher. Each volume is arranged chronologically, contains an introduction that provides helpful historical context and closes with an index that includes both letter writers and recipients. Volume 3 (1896) covers the period 1580–86 and shows both the English and Spanish perspectives on the build-up and beginning of the Anglo-Spanish war.

  • Published for the Yorkshire Archaeological Society in 1888, these two rolls for the sessions held in the West Riding of Yorkshire document court proceedings for the years 1597/8–1602 and represent the earliest extant material of their kind for the West Riding, where quarter sessions were held in various towns during Epiphany, Easter, Midsummer and Michaelmas. Although the first roll is incomplete, lacking the Epiphany sessions of 1597, the second roll contains minutes of all the sessions for 1599–1602. The indictments are drawn up in Latin, with interpolations and descriptions of the verdicts in the English of the day. Editor John Lister (1847–1933) describes in his introduction the workings of the courts and the various types of indictments. Each entry also has extensive explanatory footnotes. He prefaces the rolls with a 1595 account of proceedings in the court of the Lord President and Council of the North.

  • John Dee (1527–1608), popularly remembered as an alchemist and spiritualist, was an enthusiastic scholar specialising in mathematics and astronomy, and collected manuscripts, early printed books and scientific instruments. Despite meeting Elizabeth I in person, he never progressed in the Church, and died in poverty. The four selections from his writings reissued here show Dee painstakingly listing his books before a journey to Europe, and appealing to the Queen for help when, after a catastrophic burglary at his library and the destruction of his laboratory equipment, his pay also failed to arrive. J. O. Halliwell (1842) reproduces the full text of Dee's diaries with an index; James Crossley (1851) transcribes Dee's appeals to the Queen; Bailey's book (1880), of which only 20 copies were printed, contains a full commentary on the last five years of the diaries; and M. R. James (1920) researches the fate of Dee's books over the centuries.

Froude changed the title of this twelfth volume, having decided that the Armada marked the defeat of Catholicism in England, and the appropriate conclusion to his work.
