In our time “spirits” have been reduced to mythical beings often objectified in the form of masks.

The mask-figure of Toornarsuk, this cunning and mischievous Eskimo shamanistic spirit-figure’, seems to offer us both a mirror image of the various ways shamanism has been observed and a reflection of the complex picture shamanism presents to contemporary researchers. Shamanism, like Toornarsuk, seems both to mimic and to make sport of people and their moral and social orders. This is why shamanism, for a long period of time now, has constituted a kind of counterculture for minority communities.

The lithium form of taeniolite served as the molecular template for carbon nanocomposites. It was intercalated with hydroxy aluminum and hydroxy aluminum-zirconium cations. Aliquots of the inorganic matrices were saturated by furfuryl alcohol followed by its interlayer polymerization. The structures were heated at 973 K in nitrogen to carbonize the polymeric precursor. Additional materials were mixed with polypropylene glycol which was then carbonized within the mineral layers. The surface properties of the nanocomposites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), DTA, SEM and sorption experiments (sorption of nitrogen). The results showed that structural properties of the derived materials depend on the inorganic matrix and organic precursor. The carbon-taeniolite nanocomposites derived from polyfurfuryl alcohol as a precursor were characterized by high carbon content and a high percentage of its surface area in micropores. A broad spectrum of surface characteristics of the final products were found, depending on the history of the sample.

Both ageing and bilingualism can have positive as well as adverse cognitive effects. We investigated their combined impact on subcomponents of attention. We used the Attention Network Task to examine alerting, orienting, executive control and task-switching costs. Group comparisons revealed age-related declines for alerting alongside benefits for executive control, for mono- and bilinguals alike. For orienting, age-related decline was more pronounced for bilinguals than monolinguals. Task-switching was unaffected by age or language group. Within bilinguals, we found limited impact of individual differences in L2 proficiency, language switching or mixing: proficiency improves orienting and decreases switch costs, for young and older bilinguals alike; but no other individual differences effects were found. Thus, attention is a multi-faceted network, with clear adverse (alerting) and protective (executive control) ageing effects. We found these to be largely similar for mono- and bilinguals, with variability within bilinguals having only limited impact.

Halloysite and kaolinite coexist in anorthosite weathering profiles in the Sancheong district, Korea. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis on a transect of partially weathered anorthosites reveals an increasing amount of kaolinite development with weathering age. Microtextures were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of thin sections and raw samples in an attempt to resolve the genetic relation between halloysite and kaolinite. In the earliest stage of weathering, halloysite ellipsoids and short tubes form on the plagioclase surfaces. The successive formation of new grains from the early grains results in globular aggregates where halloysite grains are partially interconnected. With the further progress of weathering, the halloysite grains coalesce from the inner part of the aggregate outward, and convert into stacked kaolinite plates. Continuous addition of halloysite grains on existing plates and their subsequent conversion into plates form long vermicular kaolinite. Solid-state transformation is suggested as a major conversion mechanism. Concurrently with its successive transformation into kaolinite, halloysite also continuously precipitates, giving rise to overgrowths on vermicular kaolinite. Halloysite forms as a kinetically favored metastable precursor and is subsequently transformed into thermodynamically stable kaolinite. Halloysite and kaolinite coexist temporarily in the weathering profile far from equilibrium.

Comparing the state of reaction advancement of I/S (illite content of illite/smectite mixed layer minerals) and organic matter (vitrinite reflectance) in instances of high temperature gradients allows one to observe the evolution of geologic materials under extreme conditions. In a geothermally heated sedimentary series (Salton Sea area, California), both clays and organics have reacted to completion in the temperature gradient range of 200°-400oC/km during heating episodes of 104 years. We observed an instance of rapid heating, through magmatic intrusion into the Meso-Paleozoic eastern Paris Basin sedimentary series in late Permian time, which induced changes in the organic material, but where clays are apparently unaffected.

Cornelius Nepos tells us that when Cato talked of wars, he did not mention the generals’ names, but stuck to events without ever glorifying the protagonists. He saw the military exploits themselves as important and not the pride they might inspire in noblemen who were often more concerned with their personal merit than the glory of the Roman people. However, he made a few exceptions to this rule, which, precisely because they were rare, made the individual selected appear more brilliant. I shall do likewise. I intend to present a survey that will give a full account of the body of knowledge that has been consolidated between the end of the war and today. I shall deliberately give more emphasis to general trends than to specific results, highlighting the overall picture rather than individuals as such. But, as I have indicated, I shall break my rule occasionally to point to the birth of a new idea or to show how cooperative work developed out of an individual's vision.

Silcretes developed within the in situ regolith in the Barr Smith Range, Western Australia, were investigated using optical and electron-beam techniques. One of the cementing agents in these silcretes showed gel-like optical properties and had a variable aluminosilicate chemical composition at the scale of electron microprobe analysis so that it might be considered as allophane-like material. High resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that the material consists of a fine-grained and poorly ordered kaolinite embedded in a matrix of amorphous silica.

All scientific disciplines go through periods of self-analysis. However, this analysis often takes place as if inside a closed arena, from which it is difficult to gain a long view. Instead, in hopes of identifying the properties that define it, each discipline examines its own features in a mirror that it holds up to itself.

Yet there are other times, perhaps less frequent, when these self-evaluations are accompanied by an inquiry into the extent to which the discipline's intellectual characteristics are shaped by its relationship to other disciplines.

If utopias in the western cultural tradition owe their model of ideal, final, unitary order to the objective basis of metaphysics, have they not, like metaphysics, undergone a dissolution in Heidegger's sense of Verwindung? Insofar as the very notion of unity, like that of an ultimate metaphysical foundation, now reveals its violence and will to domination and as we are interested instead in thinking utopia as a ‘project for emancipation’, the author suggests replacing the unity that was hitherto characteristic of utopia with a multiplicity that is defended as a value and not as a phase of ‘confusion’ to be overcome.

OH-A1 solutions were prepared by adding appropriate amounts of NaOH to A1C13 to obtain OH/Al mole ratios of 2.0, 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, and 3.3 in the final suspension. Solid Na2SO4 and Georgia kaolinite (KGa-2) were added individually and jointly to the OH-Al solutions. All samples were aged for 30, 70, and 180 d. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry were used to characterize precipitates. Bayerite, gibbsite, and nordstrandite crystallized at mole ratios of 3.0 and 3.3, with bayerite being the most abundant. A morphology of clusters of triangular pyramids is described for bayerite. Despite the aging duration, only noncrystalline Al compounds were obtained in mole ratios of 2.0, 2.5, or 2.7. The addition of sulfate to OH-A1 solutions in mole ratios of 2.0 and 2.5 produced crystalline basic aluminum sulfates of variable morphology, but with similar chemical compositions. These phases lost crystallinity with aging. The product from a 2.7 OH-Al solution was X-ray amorphous hydroxysulfate. In contrast, products obtained at mole ratios of 3.0 and 3.3 contained no sulfate ion, which restricted the formation of gibbsite, bayerite, and nordstrandite. The addition of kaolinite to the solutions in OH/A1 mole ratios of 3.0 and 3.3 favored the formation of nordstrandite. The simultaneous addition of sulfate and kaolinite to the OH-A1 solutions in mole ratios of 2.0 and 2.5 produced prevalent sulfate over kaolinite, whereas the opposite occurred at mole ratios 3.0 and 3.3.

The effect of interlayering montmorillonite with different amounts of hydroxy aluminum cation on the cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the point of zero charge (PZC) of the clay was studied. The CEC decreased as the Al content of the clay increased. Both the CEC and the loss in the CEC were linearly dependent on the Al content, thus indicating the predominance of a single polynuclear interlayered species. Its composition is [Al6(OH)16.5]1.5+. Acid base titration of the interlayered montmorillonites produced values for the PZC in the range 4.5-5.9, increasing with the Al content of the materials. The values, however, did not represent real conditions of zero charge and some samples were still negatively charged at the determined PZC. The PZC values obtained by acid-base titration are thought to be adversely affected by secondary reactions involving the interlayered material with a concomitant release of soluble Al in amounts dependent on the pH and ionic strength.

Decomposition of complex X-ray diffraction profiles is used on well characterized (image analysis of transmission electron micrographs, X-ray fluorescence chemical analyses) diagenetic samples from the Paris basin. The simultaneous occurrence of three “illitic” phases (mixed-layer illite/smectite or I/S, poorly crystallized illite, and mica-like phase) is shown on the various diffraction peaks of the 2–50 °2θ CuKα (44–1.8 Å) range. However, because of theoretical and experimental constraints, it is easier to perform the decomposition routine in the 5–11 °2θ CuKα (17.6–8.0 Å) range. The identification (i.e., illite content and mean coherent scattering domain size) of the various phases is performed by comparing the associated elementary peak characteristics (position, full width at half maximum intensity) with simulated X-ray patterns. When available, the characteristics obtained from the various angular regions are mutually consistent; however, the precise structures of smectite and illite end-members, on the one hand, and the structure of I/S crystallites, on the other hand, are not well known. Consequently, on some angular regions, there is a discrepancy between the characteristics obtained on experimental and calculated X-ray profiles. The definition of more realistic simulation hypotheses for I/S minerals, and for other interstratified clay minerals, would make this powerful and reliable tool to describe X-ray patterns a precise and sensitive identification tool even for complex clay parageneses.

Substantial studies have been carried out to investigate the mechanism of the formation of Al(OH)3 polymorphs. The influence of the nature of Al precipitation products on the formation of Al(OH)3 polymorphs still remains obscure. In this study, X-ray diffraction, infrared and thermal analyses, and electron microscopic observations of the Al precipitates formed at the initial pH 8.2 and at a citric acid/Al molar ratio of 0.01 and aged for 3 hr to 60 days revealed that the transformation from the initially formed noncrystalline materials to pseudoboehmite occurred through the formation of intermediate materials with various degrees of ordering and sizes of particles that apparently had a wide range of solubility. By increasing the pH of the suspension of precipitation products of Al to 10.0 after 3 hr and 3, 11, 31, and 60 days or longer, the crystalline precipitation products were hayerite, nordstrandite and bayerite, nordstrandite and pseudoboehmite, pseudoboehmite and gibbsite, and pseudoboehmite, respectively. This work shows evidence that, as the nature of the starting Al precipitates changed, the rate of their dissolution apparently changed, and various Al(OH)3 polymorphs consequently formed. Therefore, the data substantiate the hypothesis that the mechanism of the formation of an Al(OH)3 polymorph is determined by the rate of its nucleation, which is, in turn, influenced by the rate of dissolution of the noncrystalline or poorly ordered Al-oxides initially formed.

Even before the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Iran's border provinces, which contain Arabs, Azeri Turks, Baluch, Kurds, and Turkmen, were marginalized and securitized by the state. These processes and outcomes have created a vicious cycle and self-fulfilling prophecy within the context of the so-called security-development nexus. Iran's peripheral provinces border Iraq and Turkey in the west and Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east. They are located far from Tehran in the inaccessible and inhospitable terrain and climate of mountains and deserts. This geography and topography partially explain why these provinces have been traditionally neglected by the state. Beyond the geographic remoteness and topographic inaccessibility of these provinces, their ethno-religious demographics and marginalization-based grievances, including those that existed during the shah's industrial and urban-focused development drive before the revolution, have fostered local opposition to the state. Most recently, between 2022 and 2023, this opposition has culminated in the Jina Mahsa Amini or Woman, Life, Freedom protests.

More than 40 samples of Al precipitation products formed in the presence of organic (aspartic, oxalic, citric, tartaric, malic, salicylic, and tannic acid, and acetylacetone) and inorganic (chloride, sulfate and phosphate) ligands, which were short-range-ordered materials after 2–5 months of aging, were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) examination after prolonged periods of aging in the mother liquids (from 7–15 years). Noncrystalline materials were found after 7–10 years of aging in samples formed in the presence of citrate, tartrate, and tannate at pH ≤ 8.0 and at ligand/Al molar ratios (R) ranging from 0.05–0.1; they were found as well in the presence of phosphate and malate at ligand/Al molar ratios from 0.1–0.5. Poorly crystalline Al-oxyhydroxides (pseudoboehmite) without Al(OH)3 polymorphs were found in solutions with a wide range of pH (from 6.0–11.0) in the presence of tartrate, citrate, tannate, malate, salicylate, sulfate, and phosphate after 7–15 years. The crystallinity of these samples was indeed very poor. On the contrary, gibbsite formation was observed in samples formed at pH 7.0 or 8.0 in the presence of oxalate (R = 0.1 or 1.0), aspartate (R = 0.1 and 0.5), malate (R = 0.03 or 0.17), salicylate (R = 0.05), and in samples containing very high concentrations of chloride (R = 700 or 1000). Finally, the formation of gibbsite was promoted in the presence of montmorillonite, but some samples at pH ≤ 6.0 in the presence of citrate (R = 0.1), tartrate (R = 0.1), or tannate (R = 0.02 or 0.1) showed after 6 years of aging interstratification of OH-Al species in the interlayers of the clay mineral and complete lack of Al(OH)3 polymorphs.

The UNESCO research projects focusing on The Silk Routes and The Slave Routes were launched at just the right time to remind us that globalization is not a novel dimension of the history of humanity. Not only am I among those who analyze capitalism as a worldwide system from its very inception, but I have also found it pertinent to recall that prior to the sixteenth century, societies were not at all isolated from one another but rather competing within regional systems (and perhaps within one global system). To underestimate this fact is to condemn ourselves to a misunderstanding of the very dynamics of change within societies. At the same time, I maintain that in the history of the world, capitalism represents a qualitative rupture that had its beginnings around 1500. Accordingly I emphasize the distinction that must be made between the integrated structure of the worldwide capitalist system and the protocapitalist elements that are to be found in earlier societies; I also underline the specificity of the contrast between centers and peripheries, which is unique to global capitalism and which differs from previous forms of polarization.

The transformation of kaolinite to halloysite-7 Å was identified in the kaolin deposit of São Vicente de Pereira (SVP), using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Both the 02, 1̄ and 13̄, 13 reflections show changes in the XRD patterns along the kaolinite to halloysite-7 Å transition, and the FTIR spectra show changes corresponding to both OH− and Si-O-stretching bands and Al-O-Si-bending vibrations. The interlayer water content in the kaolinite structure increases during transition. The two-layer periodicity of well-ordered kaolinite and rolling up of kaolinite plates are observed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Long and short tubes exhibit halloysite-7 Å. No structural Fe was found in the kaolinite samples. Analytical electron microscopy (AEM) indicates no substitution of Al3+ for Si4+. The Si/Al ratio shows values of ∼1 for the kaolinite and rolled kaolinite plates. The 27Al magic angle spinning neutron magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) spectra display a resonance centered at ∼1 ppm, assigned to six-coordinated aluminum. The transformation of kaolinite to halloysite-7 Å is controlled by surface reaction.

Boron adsorption at constant ionic strength [0.09 ± 0.01 moles/liter of KClO4 or Ca(ClO4)2] on 0.2−2 μm clay fraction of pretreated kaolinite was modeled using both phenomenological equations and surface complexation reactions. Phenomenological equations were expressed as linear relationships between the distribution coefficient and adsorption density or equilibrium concentration. The normalized form of the isotherms allowed the distribution coefficient to be predicted over a wide range of adsorption densities or equilibrium concentrations and pH. The Langmuir isotherm revealed a weak two-part linear trend supported by a similar behavior of the van Bemmelen-Freundlich isotherm. Potential adsorption mechanisms were assessed from these isotherms. The bases for the inner-sphere (surface coordination) and outer-sphere (ion-pair) surface reactions were postulated, and equations were developed and incorporated into the generalized triple-layer surface-complexation model [TL(g)-SCM]. Boron adsorption was best modeled using the inner-sphere complexes. The results confirm that the generalized triple-layer surface-complexation model can provide information regarding plausible reactions at the substrate/aqueous interface. Intrinsic constants for postulated surface reactions were derived as fitting parameters over a range of pH and initial boron concentrations.

This paper presents an acoustic study of coarticulation of Argentine Danish /ts/ using Centre of Gravity (CoG) as the acoustic measure. It shows that the articulation of /ts/ is affected by the roundedness of the following vowel, and that this is more prevalent among speakers of Argentine Danish than among speakers of Modern Danish as spoken in Denmark. The analysis also shows that within Argentine Danish, the speakers of the isolated settlement Eldorado have a larger effect of roundedness in their articulation of /ts/ than the speakers of the settlements in the Pampas and in Buenos Aires. The results are discussed from the perspective of phonological theory on enhanced coarticulation as a source of sound change and from the perspective of theory of language change in heritage languages.
